URBANISTICA ALLA 4ª INTERNATIONAL SPRING SCHOOL - KOCHI UNIVERSITY, SUSAKI CITY (GIAPPONE)
4th international spring school PREPARe
Phase-Free Machizukuri based on tourism development
Dual design for 100years future
Spring school 2024
Susaki district, Susaki city. Kochi prefecture, Japan.
March | 8-14 | 2024
The coastal area of Susaki City faces major disaster risks, including a huge Nankai Trough earthquake, which is expected to occur with a probability of 70-80% within 30 years, and flood damage due to heavy rainfall. Municipalities with high disaster risk, such as the city of Susaki, are focusing attention on the “phase-free” concept of embedding disaster prevention into economic and social activities during normal times, and advanced efforts in the tourism and education sectors, such as a case of Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture, are attracting attention.
Susaki City is currently promoting regional revitalization of the old downtown Susaki area, through unique tourism perspecti- ves such as the “Sea Town Project” and the “Fishing mania City”.
Based on this, this Spring School will examine ideas for adding a “phase-free” perspective to the city’s tourism and community development, so that Susaki City can flexibly accept disasters and depopulation and aging population, and con- nect with the next generation as an attractive city.
Aims and goals of the spring school
- understanding earthquake and tsunami related vulnerability and risk
- understanding the economic situation of the area, local life style and the issues of anging society, including daily life problems
- understanding countermeasures implemented by local authorities, residents and local NGO’s
- drafting a dual area- a combination of architectural design and social design for both community disaster mitigationa and community revitalisation.
